For the first time ever.

By benreinhardt

I am a huge fan of Calvin and Hobbes, and I have yet to find a comic I did not find funny. Not saying I roll on the floor laughing every time I read one, but every one I have read, I have enjoyed. Until now.

Calvin and Hobbes “golosh”

Calvin struggles to put on galoshes, which make a galosh noise as Calvin walks contentedly through the snow, and then he stops, apparently confused. (Maybe he is confused why Bill drew him in this particular scene, and not doing something amazing.)

Am I missing something, or is Mr. Watterson human after all?

The joke, if there is one, has to do with where Calvin is going.

Or perhaps it’s even simpler, and he’s just surprised that his galoshes make the sound galosh.

I figured the humor was in the fact that his galoshes made the sound galosh. Frankly, the more I type galosh the more I think that is where the joke lies.
    Galosh galosh galosh. Hmmm.

The galosh noise was initially what I thought it was, but it also occurred to me that it could be that he put on galoshes right over his shoes. In the end though, I’m still just as confused as Calvin is in the last frame.

this strip is a big reason why i like bill watterson, actually. it fits with the other calvin and hobbes and totally describes my experience of playing in the snow, especially if there are no friends to play with: you get all dressed and go galoshing through the snow (enjoying that sound for a while, ben), realize all there is out there is snow, and are immediately bored.

that blank look so perfectly describes the “oh that wasn’t as cool as i thought it would be” feeling. way to go, bill!
